Inspiration and Design:
It was the last regular season game of 2005, and the last game to be played at old Busch Memorial Stadium.  A newer stadium was being constructed just south of where the old one stood.  The gates and festivities were open hours in advance of the start of the game to allow the fans to enjoy the beloved stadium one last time.  As was customary just prior to every game, the footbridge across 8th Street was swarmed with fans.  On this day, thousands of wistful fans were mingling around the stadium for several hours leading up to game time.  The sky was slightly overcast and very bright.  I've seen a number of games at this stadium, starting from when I was a child.  My most vivid memory of these games was the mob of fans clad in red and white flooding aross the pedestrian walkway (from Stadium Garage-West) fifteen minutes prior to game time.  My painting composition was sure to include the footbridge swarmed with fans.  This vantage point was ideal because it provided a view of the bridge, both the old and new stadium, as well as the "wrecking ball".
