Forest Park, Saint Louis, MO (View location of my easel)

"Forest Park, Autumn"
Oil   12x16
Inspiration and Design: View subject
I was painting with the Missouri Plein Air Painters.  We were on location in Forest Park at the foot of Art Hill.  Forest Park was dedicated in 1876, and is the 500-acre heart of Saint Louis.  More than ten million visitors come to the park each year to participate in softball, cricket, rugby, tennis, golf, archery, lacrosse and soccer.  They also jog, walk, bicycle, ice and roller skate, roller blade, paddle-boat, canoe, fish, and ride horseback.  Additionally, many key city attractions are inside the park: Zoo, Muny theater, History Museum, Art Museum, Science Museum, and Boathouse.  Sunshine was plentiful, but so was cold wind.  Over the course of the day, several painting easels were blown over.  With the sunshine and cold wind, it was a perfect setting to depict the feel of autumn.  My primary goal for this painting was to depict the colors of Forest Park in autumn.  Further, I wanted to include several key aspects into the composition: trees, foot bridge, canals, and the stately Chase Park Plaza Hotel on the eastern boundary of the park.  The focal paint in composition is the Chase Park Plaza structure in the distance.  The blue color of the distant structure is perfectly complemented by the plentiful amount of orange in the balance of the composition.
