Tower Grove Park (View location of my easel)
August 30--10am
"Lily Pond at Tower Grove Park"
Oil   16x12
Inspiration and Design:
I was painting on location with the Missouri Plein Air Painters at Tower Grove Park.  The sky started bright and clear, but clouds started building overhead soon, and it was totally overcast at 2 pm.  As expected in late august, the lily ponds in the park were in glorious bloom.  It was a riot of color in both, bloom and vegetation.  Painting a single water lily grouping would not convey the full beauty of the day.  The beauty lied in the full pond, the summation of all the lilies.  To state my pleasure in this landscape, I chose a vertical sweep of the pond for my composition.  This enabled me to depict many water lily varietals, and many colors.  In my design, I was purposeful with my brushstoke direction.  The lilies are painted with a dominance of horizontal strokes, while the water, vertical.  This brushstoke pattern depicts well the "float" of the lilies.  The essential challenge was to condense the 5000 sqare feet of colorful nature onto one small white canvas, 12 inches by 16 inches.
