"Mississippi Cottonwoods, Winter"
Oil     11x14
Inspiration and Design:
It was a typical sunny winter day in Missouri.  The temperature was well below freezing.  Fortunately, outfitted with air-activated feet warmers, I barely noticed.  (Thanks to my wife, Penny, for insisting that I try the warmers.)  I was painting with the Missouri Plein Air Painters at Cliff Cave Park along the Mississippi River.  At one point while painting, a Bald Eagle flew low over our heads.  Not many events can cause a group of artists to turn their focus away from their paintings, but that is one of them.  At this time of the year, the Mississippi Greenway transforms into a "Gold Way".  The tall grasses of the previous summer transform into spectacular shades of gold, orange, yellow, tan, and brown.  My goal for this painting was to depict the waves of gold grasses growing on this undulating terrain.
